I began my violin journey at the age of 13, and my deep passion for the instrument led me to practice relentlessly, allowing me to achieve my Grade 8 certification within just five years. By 18, I had already begun teaching, sharing my love for the violin with others. Over the years, I had the privilege of performing for distinguished VIPs and heads of state, including Lee Kuan Yew, Halimah Yacob, various ministers, and played with renowned orchestras such as the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra (BHSO), The Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO), and the NUS Symphony Orchestra (NUSSO). I co-founded the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) Music Interest Group, and later went on to establish the SUSS Philharmonic Orchestra, further contributing to the local university's music scene.
My teaching philosophy centers on accelerating students’ learning through a combination of structured guidance and parental support. Using Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development and Bruner’s Spiral Curriculum, I tailor lessons to meet each student where they are, ensuring that new concepts are built on a solid foundation of prior knowledge.
Retention is key—my goal is for students to remember what they’ve learned in the lesson and apply it confidently at home. I believe parents play a crucial role in guiding home practice, not by teaching but by supporting their child’s learning process. Emotional connection and enjoyment are essential components of my teaching; laughter and fun create a positive environment that fosters a deeper interest in learning the violin. This philosophy has extended beyond my teaching roles in international schools and colleges in Singapore, as I have also shared it with Qatar’s Dadu Children’s Museum, coaching their facilitators to implement a music program I designed specifically for them.
I hold a Bachelor of Music Education, which has provided me with a strong foundation in pedagogical principles and a deep understanding of music theory, performance, and teaching methodologies. Building upon this, I pursued a Master of Arts in Arts and Cultural Leadership, equipping me with the skills to manage and lead in the arts sector. This advanced degree has allowed me to blend my passion for music education with strategic leadership, enabling me to contribute not only as a violin educator but also as a leader in shaping arts and cultural initiatives.
